Who can use kicksleds?
Kicksledding is well suited for fitness training and competitive sports or just moving outdoors in winter. Kicksledding is easy to learn; even after a few minute's practice anybody can get a hang of kicking.
Kicksled for exercise
Kicksledding also improves your physical condition effectively, if that is what you desire. It exercises the big muscles in the body diversely, especially muscles at lower back and at the back of thighs. It is also easy to start training with the kicksled, because you may easily change the tempo to whatever you want and even walk for a while if you feel like it.
Kicksled in traffic
It is useful to know that in traffic a kick slider is considered to be a pedestrian and in the dark it is good to have an extra reflector or a separate light in addition to the kicksled reflectors.
Ice is a great place for kicksledding!!
Kicksled riding can be done even in sanded areas of the town on small roads, lake or sea ice or snow tracks. Nowadays densely populated areas are usually equipped with outing routes, which can be used for kicksledding perfectly.
You should always be confirmed about the robustness of ice before you go. There must be at least five centimeters of glossy, black sturdy ice everywhere.
Sunshine can make the ice crispy
Pay attention to streamy water, any rocks and shoals, near bridges and riverbeds - the ice can be significantly thinner there. Also at spring time the warm sunshine makes the ice crispy rapidly. There must be then at least 20 centimeters of ice that you should feel safe. It is always very advisable to carry a pair of icestuds with you.
In case you ever plunge:
- Shout loud for help.
- Break some weak ice in direction you were coming from.
- Pull your upper body on the ice with the help of your icestuds.
- Roll yourself on the ice and crawl on all fours into direction you were coming from.
- Seek back to the warmth as soon possible.
Remember, never risk yourself by going on any weak ice!
Kicking technique
It is a relief to hear, that the technique does not have to be perfect! Later on, especially in racing, it is a good idea to try to improve your technique a little, but beginners may just “kick around as they feel best”. The following list includes a few basic things, which are useful to keep in mind:
- Kick economically, get rid of all unnecessary movements. When the kicksledding is done correctly, only the muscles that do the kicking, work.
- Do not press the handles too tightly. Keep your weight lightly on the supporting leg and do not lean to your hands.
- Change the supporting leg often. A suitable rhythm is about five kicks with the same leg. When changing legs, stand on both runners for a while and keep looking forward.
- Let the sled slide. Use long kicks and enjoy the ride:-)
